Echocardiography

An echocardiogram, or cardiac ultrasound, uses ultrasound techniques to image two-dimensional slices of the heart. It can also accurately assess the velocity of blood flow to:

  • assess the size and function of the heart chambers
  • evaluate the cardiac valves
  • assess congenital abnormalities of the heart
  • identify fluid around the heart
  • recognise infiltration in the heart
